How to Manage School Anxiety as a Teen

School can be overwhelming for many teens today. Between academic pressure, social expectations, extracurricular activities, and future planning, it’s easy to feel anxious, stressed, and emotionally exhausted. If you’ve noticed yourself worrying constantly about grades, tests, friendships, or disappointing others, you’re not alone.

School anxiety is common, and it doesn’t mean anything is “wrong” with you. It means your mind and body are responding to pressure. The good news? There are healthy ways to manage school anxiety. Here are five you can start using right away:

1. Practice Calm Breathing

Slow, deep breathing helps signal your nervous system to relax. Try inhaling for four counts, holding for four, and exhaling for six.

2. Break Tasks into Small Steps

Large assignments feel overwhelming. Divide them into smaller, manageable parts and complete them one at a time.

3. Challenge Negative Thoughts

When you think, “I’m going to fail,” ask yourself:
“What evidence do I have for this?”
Replace it with: “I’m doing my best, and that’s enough.”

4. Create a Consistent Routine

Having regular sleep, study, and relaxation times helps reduce uncertainty and stress.

5. Make Time for Enjoyment

Rest and fun are not distractions - they are essential for mental health. Schedule time for hobbies, friends, and relaxation.

School anxiety can feel exhausting, but it doesn’t have to control your life. With the right tools and support, you can learn to manage stress, build confidence, and feel more capable in school and beyond.

If you or your teen is struggling with anxiety, professional support can make a meaningful difference.
